My focus as a Personal Trainer is to understand the nature of my client's problem and what they want to change, then training can become a collaboration.
I always try to respect and understand my client's values and goals, looking for ways my client can be empowered to act on their ideas.
Treating my client as a whole person and appreciating the apprehension they must overcome just to ask for help is key. I think it's important to ask questions and listen carefully to identify meaningful priorities, then offer guidance based on those priorities, and involve my client in the solution-making process.
I think my client needs to discover their own reasons for changing. They need to find their own "why" which puts them in charge and makes them more accountable to themselves, more responsible, and less resistant to training suggestions that can help them achieve their goals.
In my experience, achieving fitness goals takes consistent effort over a long period of time. It takes dedication and patience. It's a process.
